MP3
A codec so popular that it became an everyday noun. Easily the world's most common codec for saving music files.

H.264
You may not have heard of it, but you'll certainly have seen it. H.264 is the most important codec for high definition video. It is used in many blu-ray discs, camcorders and is becoming very popular for home users who want to compress their HD videos.

Opus
A new codec designed for HD audio streaming. Skype have lead the development and it has been accepted as a new standard by the IETF. It will soon be used in all of Skype's software an a wide variety of platforms. It's expected to be used in the iPhone app so you should soon make with CD quality audio.

AAC
The second most popular music codec. Quality wise it's actually better than MP3, it's also the standard codec used in Apple's iTunes.

DivX
An extremely popular video codec. It's a fairly easy way to compress video files without too much loss in quality.

Xvid
An opens source relative of DivX. It is significantly more complex than DivX. Expert users can achieve better results than with DivX, but it's much more difficult to use.

FLAC
A popular lossless audio codec, this basically means it produces CD quality results.

SILK
The codec Skype currently uses. It is used in the vast majority of VoIP calls although it will soon make way for Opus.

G.711
Another codec designed for carrying voice over the internet. Along with Opus it is a standard used in the WebRTC project, which is intended to improve and standardise the web's real time communication functionality.

WMA
The Windows Media Audio codec was developed by Microsoft to rival MP3, while it does produce good results it never came close to becoming as popular as MP3
