1
Dodge Magnum (Wagon)
This five-passenger wagon with a gigantic backseat made both our 2005 Editors' Most Wanted list and the Hippest Vehicles for 2005 list. Our road test editors say, "The Magnum is able to deliver ride and handling qualities that rival many sedans" and, "It turns heads like a Ferrari on fire." And for days when cargo gets wet or muddy, its cargo floor reverses from carpet to a washable surface. Seats five.
2
Ford Freestyle (Wagon)
Although the Freestyle is somewhat underpowered when fully loaded, it makes up for it elsewhere. The wagon's comfortable "progressive theater seating" for the second and third rows (each row is 2 inches higher than the one before it) allows all six or seven passengers to have great visibility while still maintaining exceptional head-, leg- and cargo room. A low step-in height and easy-to-access third-row seat allow it to rival minivans for interior utility. Seats six.
3
Mercedes-Benz E-Class (Wagon)
Our editors elected the Mercedes E-Class wagon as one of their 2005 Editors' Most Wanted for its excellent driving dynamics, numerous safety and luxury features and high style. The available V6 or powerful V8 engine and excellent frontal crash test scores make this a pricey but sophisticated choice. This is one wagon where you don't have to sacrifice luxury for utility. Seats seven (with rear-facing third-row seat).
4
Chrysler Pacifica (Wagon)
The Pacifica's nontraditional styling is a hit with moms over 30. Though it doesn't have much cargo space behind the already tight third-row seat, the rear seats can be folded flat into the floor when you need more space. Upscale amenities, stable handling and super-comfortable seats enhance the package. The Pacifica earned a perfect five-star score in NHTSA's front- and side-impact crash tests (when equipped with side curtain airbags) and a "Best Pick" rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in its frontal offset crash test. Seats five or six.
5
Mazda 6 (Wagon)
Sporty and fun to drive, Mazda 6 is by far the most attractive car in this group. Although it won't suit those with carpool duty, moms of one or two will love the fact that they can easily load up a kid and a stroller without compromising on style or behind-the-wheel entertainment. Strong crash test scores and a full complement of airbags provide peace of mind. Seats five.
6
Volvo XC90 (SUV)
Typically the safety pioneer, Volvo has taken extra measures to prevent rollovers in its SUV and to protect you and the little ones just in case. At the same time, the XC90 rides smoothly, maneuvers easily and provides plush interior with ample room in all three rows. It's a great car overall that makes few compromises in any area. Seats five or seven.
7
Cadillac SRX (SUV)
From our editor's logbook: "The SRX is the most refined sport-utility vehicle a domestic manufacturer has ever turned out. Its drivetrain and handling dynamics are sublime, its interior comfort and space lead the class for the most part." For extra cool factor, its third-row seat powers down into the floor, and buyers can opt for the UltraView sunroof, which lets in 5 square feet of open air over the first two rows. Seats five.
8
Land Rover LR3 (SUV)
If you can afford its mid-$40Ks sticker price, the LR3 is a special ride. You want goodies? The 300-horsepower LR3 comes with a touchscreen navigation system, Bluetooth-enabled communication and an optional 14-speaker, 600-watt Harman Kardon surround sound stereo that will please both techno- and audiophiles. You can also order a fixed glass roof that filters out heat and UV rays while letting in the view above. On the more pedestrian level, both the second- and third-row seats can be folded flat in individual partitions for increased cargo capacity and flexibility and, of course, you can actually take this baby off-road with supreme confidence. Seats five.
9
Dodge Durango (SUV)
Better, stronger, faster. Like the old Bionic Man TV show, the Dodge Durango improved so much during its 2004 redesign that it became almost a different being. Whether you choose the much touted V8 Hemi engine or not, this midsize SUV with full-size capability looks tough, but has a lot of comfort and utility. Interior room approaches, or even exceeds, that of the Ford Expedition and Toyota Sequoia (although, second-row legroom can be tight for teenage carpoolers). The one downside? Although enjoyable to drive, it's quite thirsty at the pump. Seats seven.
10
Ford Escape Hybrid (SUV)
Voted one of our Top 10 Hippest Vehicles for 2005, the first hybrid SUV appeals on so many levels. This compact SUV is reasonably priced, ecologically friendly, powerful, spacious and easy to drive. It also features standard antilock brakes, and a new electronically controlled all-wheel-drive system. We also like the optional Safety Canopy rollover protection system and full-length side curtain airbags. All that, and it's cute, to boot. Seats five.
