1
Dried fruit
Individual-sized packets of raisins, dried cranberries, apricots or pineapple cubes are just as sweet as candy but contain a concentrated dose of fibre and nutrients, meaning you're getting much more bang for your caloric buck. For a special treat, you could perhaps even go for chocolate or yoghurt-covered versions.
2
Nuts and seeds
Again, snack packs of peanuts, almonds, sunflower seeds or the seasonally appropriate pumpkin seeds are a fun and crunchy option that can easily take the place of crisps. They're also a good source of protein, healthy fats, nutrients and minerals, so they'll benefit far more than your tastebuds. Be careful, though, if you know of children with allergies in the neighbourhood.
3
Cereal or granola bars
While commercially-prepared versions can still be quite high in sugar, at least these chewy treats contain more fibre and nutrition than standard chocolate bars. Try to avoid those that are coated in chocolate, however, and consider healthier homemade versions for children you know.
4
Baked pretzels or vegetable crisps
Baked versions are a healthier alternative to the usual saturated-fat laden crisps, although they can still be high in sodium. In moderation, however, these snacks will hit the spot and overall are less likely to contribute to health conditions that eventually might require private health care.
5
Fruit juice
Snack-sized boxes of pure fruit juice make a refreshing and nutritious alternative to all the sweets, and are much preferable to fizzy or sugary drinks.
6
Popcorn
Low-fat microwave popcorn is a reasonably healthy snack. Popcorn itself is rich in antioxidants and fibre, although microwave versions still contain quite a bit of sodium. Still, individual-sized bags make for a handy Halloween treat.
7
Sugar-free goodies
It's possible to find all kinds of sugar-free products for a special treat. Sugar-free sweets, chewing gum, or hot chocolate packets may not be everyday food, but they let you feel you're indulging your sweet tooth without the blood sugar spikes.
8
Real juice gummies
They may still be full of sugar and perhaps not the greatest for your children's teeth, but at least gummy sweeties made with real fruit juice contain more nutritional value than the standard version, and often offer other benefits, such as being made with organic ingredients.
9
Cereal
Yes, you read that correctly. Those tiny boxes of cereal that contain just enough for a single serving are a great treat. Sometimes just the process of repackaging something in a fun format can be enough to make it feel special, and when the kids are tired and hungry after all the Halloween festivities, cereal is a much more filling snack than chocolate or sweeties.
10
Non-food treats
Why not skip the sweeties and crisps entirely and hand out toys or other surprises? It may end up being a hit with your young trick-or-treaters or partygoers. Crayons, bookmarks, comics, bottles of bubbles and stickers are all good ideas, while active games such as a skipping rope encourage the little spooks to burn off all that sugar.
