The Italian-American Mafia has its roots in the Sicilian mob, but has been a separate organization in the United States for years. Many of the founding members of the American mafia emigrated from Italy in the beginning of the 20th century. These individuals gained the nickname Mustache Petes and were members of the Sicilian Mafia, looking to control the lucrative American market.
