Baruch College -- City University of New York

The "hard-working" student body at Baruch could well be "the most diverse university in the country." It's the sort of place where "You can eat samosas on Tuesday, mooncakes on Wednesday and falafel on Thursdays for free because of all the cultural events that are held." Students brag that "hundreds of countries are represented in our student body" and note that "the one common thread would be we are mostly business-oriented and have jobs/internships outside of school." Students who considered Baruch also looked at City University of New York -- Hunter College, Fordham University, New York University and City University of New York -- Brooklyn College.

University of Maryland -- Baltimore County

Baltimore, Md.
"There is no typical student" on the "very diverse" UMBC campus. "Everyone varies, from preppy cheerleaders and jocks to antisocial art nerds to normal human beings to religious fanatics to animal rights activists to overachievers to underachievers to foreigners to truly gifted kids to how-did-they-pass-their-SATs kids to druggies to good people and everything in between." The campus is also "full of nontraditional students who are married/engaged, have kids and work." The Asian population is so large at UMBC that "Some folks describe UMBC as 'U Must Be Chinese,' but the majority are Caucasians, with minority Black/African-Americans, and a noticeable number of Indian/Pakistani ethnic groups." Students who considered University of Maryland -- Baltimore County also looked at Virginia Tech, Johns Hopkins University and University of Maryland -- College Park.

Diversity at Brooklyn College is fabulous. "Students at Brooklyn College are as diverse as the New York City population," proudly boasts a senior. You'll find students of many, many ethnicities, religions and cultures here. There are people of all ages, too. You've got your "child prodigies." "You have your baby-faced freshman straight from high school and then your older gentleman who could pass for a history professor with his suit and tie." Students who considered Brooklyn College also looked at City University of New York -- Hunter College, Baruch College -- City University of New York, City University of New York -- Queens College and New York University.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham

With diverse academic and extracurricular opportunities, UAB is a school that "fits most every type of person." As a result, the student body is "truly a great American melting pot of different cultures, religions and races." "Students work together for the common goal of getting an education, and understanding and appreciating the diversity of others," one student says. Students who considered The University of Alabama at Birmingham also looked at The University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa, Auburn University, Clemson University, University of Georgia and Birmingham-Southern College.

The "student body is so diverse," it often feels to students as if "There is a little of everything at Temple University," "From goth to preppy, from European to Asian, from straight male to transsexual, Temple has it all." "Students come from so many diverse backgrounds; no common denominator among them can really be found." This diversity might be "the reason why all students feel welcome here." It also "makes it a great place to learn and live. It's a full cultural experience." Students who considered Temple also looked at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey -- Newark Campus, University of Maryland -- College Park, West Chester University of Pennsylvania, LaSalle University and Rutgers University -- Camden College of Arts & Sciences.

"University of Miami is one of the most diverse colleges in the nation. One will find all types of ethnicities, religious and political faiths, as well as cultural backgrounds" here. The Hispanic and Latino communities are substantial, and there are "many international students." As one student puts it, "Miami is like living in a public-service announcement: beautiful setting, racially diverse people, [courses] available in other languages." Students who considered University of Miami also looked at Duke University, Vanderbilt University, New York University, University of Southern California and Boston University.

"In terms of socioeconomic status, immigrants, languages, cultures, religion, race, ethnicity, age ... Hunter has it all." "Students range in age from newly graduated high schoolers to retirees." And "There really doesn't seem to be [a] dominant ethnic group." It's the kind of place where "nothing seems too out of the ordinary," "everyone fits in fine," and where it won't surprise you to see a "White punk rock girl having a friendly conversation with a Muslim girl in the full head-to-toe [garb]." Students who considered Hunter also looked at Baruch College -- City University of New York, Fordham University, New York University and City University of New York -- Brooklyn College.

State University of New York -- Stony Brook University

Stony Brook, N.Y.
The typical student at Stony Brook University "is a middle-class Long Island or Queens kid of Jewish, East Asian or Indian background." Minority populations are large across a broad demographic range; the school is home to many who are "either Asian, African-American or Hispanic and very, very liberal." Students who considered Stony Brook also looked at New York University, State University of New York at Albany, State University of New York at Binghamton, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey -- New Brunswick, University of Connecticut, Penn State -- University Park and State University of New York at Geneseo.

"There is no typical student at Queens College, and that's what's great about the student body," say the students who belong to this "diverse and dedicated community." "Every racial background imaginable is represented and has a group [on campus], and every religious background is apparent." QC is a place where "Everywhere you turn people are able to speak more than one language." There's also plenty of diversity in personality types, although all students tend to be "very focused." Students who considered Queens College also looked at City University of New York -- Hunter College, Baruch College -- City University of New York, City University of New York -- Brooklyn College and New York University.

DePaul University

Chicago, Ill.
"DePaul is an extremely diverse school" with "people of all shapes, sizes, colors, etc.," students tell us. Classes encompass "a wide variety of religions, ethnicities and orientations -- I wouldn't have it any other way," beams a political science major. Students who considered DePaul also looked at Loyola University of Chicago, Northwestern University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Chicago and University of Illinois at Chicago.
