Coxinhas
Coxinhas (meaning ‘little thigh’) are commonplace through the country. These little Brazilian street snacks are a perfect quick treat to have on the move. Delicious spiced chicken and cheese are covered in dough and breadcrumbs, and deep friend until golden.

Pastéis
This is fast food at its best. Thin layers of buttery pastry is wrapped around varying fillings and deep fried to create a crispy little morsel to eat on the move. Typical fillings are minced meat, cheese heart of palm and even shrimp. There are also sweet varieties using chocolate, banana and jam. Some believe they originated from Japanese migrants emulating fried wontons. Others think that they stem from Italian calzones.

Feijoada
The national dish of Brazil. Although regional recipes vary, the basics are the same. A hearty stew of black beans and just about every part of the pig – sausages, shoulder, trotters, ears, bacon. Typically served up with fluffy white rice, farofa (dried manioc flour), orange slices and curly kale. A must try for any trip to Brazil.

Similar to a doughnut, deep fried and covered in sugar and cinnamon.

Moqueca
Hailing from the state of Bahia in the north and Espírito Santo in the South this mouth watering stew is a concoction of fish (typically prawns or swordfish), tomatoes, garlic and spices. Palm oil is also added to the dish to give it a unique flavour.

Acarajé
Brought with the slaves from the West African coast to Bahia, this street food is made from black eyed peas formed into balls and deep-friend in palm oil. The best place to try these is in the city of Salvador where they split them in half and serve with a spicy peppers and tomatoes.

Empadão
Essentially a chicken pie and a staple for many Brazilians. A tasty mix of chicken, olives, heart of palm and sweet corn covered in pastry. Empadão can be found throughout the country. There are variants something filled with shrimps or beef.

A traditional side dish from the state of Minas Gerais. Beans cooked up with pork rinds, eggs, garlic, onion and mandioca flour. Simply delicious.

Similar to a chocolate truffle but instead made using sweetened condensed milk, butter and coco powder. Variants sometimes include coconut. Typically served on birthdays or special occasions.
