The game is constantly evolving. (e.g., rubber guard didn't exist 5 years ago, now it's foundational; people are still learning what to do with leg locks)

There's no rigid dogma; jiu jitsu is "whatever works"

There's a culture of jiu jitsu that almost all students share. You can drop into a random studio, tag a guy, shake hands, and start rolling until someone taps twice.

Because the goal in grappling is to make your opponent submit (as opposed to striking until he falls over) you can train at a level that's pretty close to competition level.

There's an easy litmus test for people who talk a big game - roll with them and see if they can back it up.
