Is the harsh winter weather wearing you down? Use these top tips to banish the winter blues.
1
Exercise
It can be easy to retreat to your comfy sofa when the wind is swirling outside. Exercise promotes good blood circulation which helps keep you warm, so rescue your trainers from your wardrobe and find an indoor activity instead. Gyms for example have many classes so you’re bound to find something. Who knows, you may find a new hobby or activity. Are your feet hurting after every session? Comfortable lightweight shoes for women can make your activities much more enjoyable.
2
Sleep Longer
Feeling down in the dumps? It’s usual for people to feel glum around this time of the year. Natural sunlight produces vitamin D and serotonin which acts as a natural antidepressant in the brain. This type of depression is a medical condition known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). With less daylight during the winter months, it’s no wonder some of us feel a little down. Take advantage of the longer and darker nights by sleeping the recommended amount.
3
Massage
Why should your feet be the only ones to receive some TLC? Does it feel like your body parts are about to fall off? Then you definitely need an all-over massage. Or better yet, book yourself a weekend spa break to really feel great.
4
Slippers
Sometimes the feeling of warmth is all you need to make yourself feel better. There’s nothing like coming in from the cold, switching on the kettle and putting your feet into some fluffy slippers - it’s like giving your feet a hug.
5
Dairy Products
With colder temperatures setting in, you’re 80% more likely to develop a cold. You can dramatically decrease your chances of catching a cold by simply eating more dairy products such as milk, cheese and yogurt. Dairy products are high in protein, vitamin A and B12 and help to strengthen your immune system.
6
Meditation
Feeling stressed more than usual? Money worries affect many of us, particularly around the Christmas period which can affect your sleep. If you’re finding it hard to switch off when your head hits the pillow, try meditation before getting into bed. Simple breathing exercises can even help you feel less tense.
7
Feet TLC
If you spend a lot of time on your feet, it’s a good idea to take extra care of them. Simple things like feet exercises can make them more relaxed. You could even go the extra mile and pamper your feet with a pedicure. Check out these tips for keeping your feet healthy
8
Moisturise
Cold weather can wreak havoc with your skin, making it dry, cracked and sore. Prevent this by drinking lots of water to keep yourself hydrated. For severe dry skin you should apply moisturiser; it’ll also make your skin silky to the touch.
9
Warm Clothing
For those unlucky enough and need to venture out into the wild, make sure you wrap up to avoid getting ill! A warm winter jacket is a must! And this should be supplemented with gloves, a hat and scarf. Make sure you check the weather report before going out.
10
Healthy Diet
It can be easy to put on a few pounds after indulging in more hot chocolate drinks than usual - and this weight gain can make us feel depressed. Make it a New Year’s resolution to have a healthier diet. By getting your recommended five fruit and veg a day, you can get your shape and confidence back and feel great again.
