THE TOP TEN worst contaminants in drinking water
Whether your water comes from a private well or from city tap, there are supposed "trace" amounts of contaminants and toxins found in the drinking water. I say supposed trace because the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) sometimes has dubious allowable limits. Consider the hotly debated arsenic rule, for example.

hands down the deadliest toxin in the water.

fluoride.
not found in trace amounts in the water. it's a neurotoxin and suppresses thryoid function.

lead.
not just in paint, but in water carried through lead pipes and copper pipes with lead in the soldering.

chlorine.
some cities have amounts equivalent to that of commercial swimming pools.

nitrates.
can kill babies (blue baby syndrome) in high amounts in a short time.

TTHM's and HAA5's (two categories from DBP's)
these are carcinogenic byproducts of chlorine reacting to organic matter in the water.

voc's. (volatile organic compounds)
another umbrella category of nasty things we don't want to ingest or inhale in the shower.

pfc's
perfluorochemicals--an umbrella category of hyper-persistant chemicals that don't break down very fast in our bodies. they come from products like Scotchguard (which is no longer made b/c the chemicals are toxic)

radium and radon
two radioactive substances naturally occuring in the water.

cryptosporidium and giardia
parasites that cause horrible gastric distress and killed over 100 people in Milwaukee in 1993
