Australia
The sun, the sea, the sand, the Sydney Opera House... Australia is a tempting thought for many prospective expatriates. With no language barriers for UK workers, a growing economy and a culture which often feels familiar for people from the UK, Australia offers the chance to move very, very far away from home – while still being able to feel almost like you’re at home. Except, of course, for that abundance of sunshine!

The diversity of the US, with its world class cities, beautiful coastlines, and vast areas of unspoiled countryside, makes it a major attraction for expatriates from the UK and elsewhere. Factor in the English speaking, the supersize economy and often culturally familiar aspects of this large country and it really does offer a land of opportunity for those who decide to emigrate there.

One of the biggest countries in the world in terms of size, Canada’s population is just over half that of the UK, with approximately 34 million as compared to the UK’s number of inhabitants which is approaching 63 million. With low crime rates and a stable economy, this is a country that attracts people from all over the world, and its shared languages with the UK and France make it an attractive choice for many seeking to live and work across the Atlantic.

Like the UK's other next door neighbour France, Ireland is a major UK trading partner as well as home to large numbers of British nationals. Conveniently placed for short trips back home, Ireland is also known throughout the world for its friendliness, humour, music and wonderful landscapes.

With its image of clean air, striking countryside and mild climate, New Zealand certainly provides a welcoming backdrop for a base abroad. And with its strong history of people moving from the UK to live in this part of the antipodes, for many it quickly becomes a home from home.

Home to over 200,000 British people, South Africa is a popular choice for people looking for somewhere offering sunshine and beaches as well as vibrant cities and culture. And with South Africa’s economy aspiring to join the BRICs, it looks like an increasing numbers of opportunities could become available in the country in years to come.

Spain
A short flight away from the UK, but a different world in terms of the weather, Spain offers an environment for lots of people seeking a dream retirement close to the sea, or a job in the world class cities of Madrid and Barcelona. Tough economic times mean that, for now at least, the expatriate scene may not quite be the same as it was prior to 2008, but the country still ranks very highly indeed across a number of important criteria for quality of life among expats.

Conveniently close to the UK, it’s not at all surprising that France is favoured by many British people as an expat destination. The wonderful food, the beautiful cities, and the warmer weather ... need we go on?
Of course the feeling is mutual regarding the two countries – with up to 400,000 French people living in London alone, while yet more reside across the UK.

Another place famed for its skyscrapers is Dubai – a city that’s had its fair share of economic challenges during the past few years that now appears to be getting back to its former self. Elsewhere in the UAE, Abu Dhabi’s oil reserves mean that there are many employment opportunities for those seeking a taste of the Middle East.

Hong Kong
With its skyscrapers and bustle – as well as its truly stunning location – Hong Kong is almost a fairytale city. But for all Hong Kong’s captivating otherness there are flashes of familiarity – such as the double-decker buses, which look extremely similar to the ones you’d see in UK cities.
Hong Kong is a thriving expat destination for British nationals – and recently it was reported that the number of work visas issued to people from the UK has gone up year on year by nearly half.
