A star tour of the top detox destinations

Even celebrities need a break from the "harsh" realities of everyday life—losing the lead in the latest Hugh Grant rom-com, being unable to afford a second Gulf Stream jet for weekend getaways, failing to evade the paparazzi on a late-night burger run. Maybe that's why so many stars voluntarily commit themselves to rehab centers. But are they truly in need? Or are they going to extremes to avoid the ever-open eye of the media?

"Some may enter a rehab facility as a way to escape public scrutiny, but usually they have some sort of problem as well—even if it isn't related to addiction," says Korin Miller, arts and entertainment editor for amNew York, a daily newspaper in New York City. "However, with the huge wave of celebrities entering and exiting rehab facilities on a regular basis, blaming an embarrassing incident or poor public behavior on an addiction does seem to be an easy excuse. As a result, the public has become skeptical of a star's sincerity when he or she claims to have an addiction problem."...

DISAGREE?

Cirque Lodge

Sundance, Utah
Located on stunning Mount Timpanogos overlooking Robert Redford's Sundance resort, Cirque Lodge is fully equipped with gyms, saunas, Jacuzzis and media rooms. It captures the essence of a mountain retreat-you may even forget you're not actually on vacation. Perhaps that's why A- and B-listers like Lindsay Lohan, Eva Mendes, Mary-Kate Olsen and Kirsten Dunst have landed at its doorstep. If you don't like the après-ski feel of The Lodge—one of the center's two treatment facilities—opt instead for a stay at The Studio, a 100,000-square-foot multiplex down the road in Orem. The going rate for a room starts at $30,000 for one month.

DISAGREE?

Promises Treatment Center

Malibu and Los Angeles, Calif.
Not to be confused with Malibu's Passages, Promises is one of the better-known treatment centers in the United States and has housed such notable patients like Britney Spears, Ben Affleck, Charlie Sheen, Diana Ross and Matthew Perry. Boasting two locations, Promises' boutique-like Malibu branch occupies a palatial façade that caters to celebrities—500-thread-count sheets, tennis courts, ocean-side views, fireplace in your private room, a beautician on hand—while the L.A. site is "more affordable." Prices for the Malibu center are $49,000 for a double occupancy room and $75,000 for a private suite for one month.

DISAGREE?

Crossroads Centre

Antigua, West Indies
Crossroads isn't just the name of a Britney Spears film flop from 2002. This Caribbean treatment escape, founded by Eric Clapton, welcomed the fallen star as a guest in 2007 for a full 24 hours. Few facilities provide a more breathtaking backdrop than this lovely spot in the Leeward Islands with its acupuncturist and yoga teacher on hand. Once you've completed the program, you can arrange a little side jaunt to neighboring isles: Nevis, St. Kitts, St. Bart's, St. Martin, Guadeloupe or Montserrat. Best of all, a residential stay only puts you out $21,500.

DISAGREE?

Wonderland Center

Los Angeles, Calif.
Lindsay Lohan and Pat O'Brien have been known to book rooms in the modern, hotel-style chambers of the Wonderland Center. With more of a preppy, country club feel than that of a serious treatment center, Wonderland occupies a rustic lodge-like building in Laurel Canyon with two swimming pools and three acres of a serene nature landscape. Double rooms start at $48,000 per month; private rooms at $58,000.

DISAGREE?

Caron Drug and Alcohol Treatment Center

Wernersville, Pa.
Most celebrity-visited rehab facilities are located on the West Coast, but the East does have one crown jewel: the Caron Foundation. Located in a pinprick of a town just eight miles west of Reading, Penn., this former resort hotel features 110 acres of grounds, state-of-the-art fitness facilities and an indoor challenge course for adventure therapy. Steven Tyler, Liza Minnelli and, most recently, former Miss USA Tara Conner have made their beds here. Patients pay $24,000 per month to clean up their acts.

DISAGREE?

Beau Monde Programs

Calif.
A stint at a Beau Monde facility is more like a trip to the Ritz Carlton than a recovery program. Opened in 2002, the boutique treats no more than four people at a time and offers such luxuries as spa meals, Frette sheets, shopping, whale-watching, massages and gourmet cuisine. Nicole Richie checked into Beau Monde in 2006 for ongoing eating issues; Courtney Love made waves here when it was alleged she owed the center more than $180,000 for a three-month stay in 2005. Prices average $80,000 per month, but can reach $96,000 if you opt for a private floor in the Hollywood Hills center.

7
DISAGREE?

Meadows Rehab Center

Wickenburg, Ariz.
This Sonoran Desert locale a favorite for such boldfacers names as Whitney Houston, Kate Moss and Pete Doherty. There's nary a better place to rid yourself of outside influences than this secluded environment where all you'll see is desert and blue sky. "It's retreat-like, so people feel like they're getting away. People have also been very successful there," says Kaiser. And it's healthy, too: All meals are prepared sugar- and caffeine-free. You can become a Meadows resident for just $39,000 per 35 days.

8
DISAGREE?

Betty Ford Center

Rancho Mirage, Calif.
One of the stricter programs out there, this center was founded by the former First Lady tends to attract hardcore clients. Maids don't attend to guests' needs; rather, patients make their own beds, hang and fold their own clothes and even—gasp—make their own coffee. They're also assigned communal chores. The famous alumni include Johnny Cash, Keith Urban, Ozzy Osbourne and Stevie Nicks. Located near Palm Springs and less expensive than most of the other California facilities, Betty Ford costs a mere $24,000 a month.

9
DISAGREE?

The Priory

London, England
Although sassy Brit rocker Amy Winehouse crooned about rejecting rehab in her 2006 song, the beehived diva has since checked into—and out of—London's Priory center. (As did former lovebirds Kate Moss and Pete Doherty, who seem to favor multiple facilities.) Unlike some of the other centers that seem to mirror five-star hotels, the 107-bed Priory is more hospital-like. Still, it's situated in a verdant suburb of London and attracts a high-end clientele that's not limited to just celebrities; expect to pay $21,000 per month.

10
DISAGREE?

Passages

Malibu, Calif.
Sandwiched between the mountains and the Pacific, Passages' deluxe quarters house 29 people at one time and include 12 suites with private bathtubs, massage studios, arts and crafts rooms, acupuncture and hypnotherapy, juice bars, a library with mammoth fireplace and marble and wood accoutrements. On top of all of that, the gourmet restaurant caters to every patient's needs; there's even an auditorium for dramatic readings and play productions. Marc Jacobs and Brandon Davis (most well-known for dating starlet Mischa Barton) have sought help at Passages, which charges around $67,500 a month for a shared-room stay.
