THE TOP TEN "Old School" first person shooters (before 2002)
You know...video games where you shoot crap as if you were the main person! I am just analyzing the classics here. Please don't chime in with "Halo 4" because that means you can't read.

1
Doom
While not the first...arguable the most legendary. Still played and modified today. Has unfortunate historical significance due to one of the Columbine killers created Doom maps. Still upgraded as we speak. Some versions are as graphically enhanced as most modern games. I am not kidding...this game will not die!
2
Quake
It is still played actively today. Countless add-on packs and different engines have been created to upgrade this masterpiece. I love this game! If you have a powerful computer, then check out "DarkPlaces."
3
Half-Life
Using a modified Quake 2 engine, Valve immersed one into a rich storyline of Area 51 goodness. You can get immersed in this game...probably why it is still high on even today's list and a huge fan-base recreated the @#$% thing!
4
Duke Nukem 3D
According to Wikipedia, "reviewers praised the interactivity of the environment, level design, gameplay and unique risqué humor (a mix of pop-culture satire and lampooning of over-the-top Hollywood action heroes). Its lasting appeal and impact on modern video games has led to its being considered one of the most important video games of all time." Unfortunately, its sequel sucked big time. Like Doom and Quake, it has a rabid fan base and has been updated considerably!
5
Wolfenstein 3D
Arguably the great-grandfather of the fps (first person shooter) genre. I have to admit, even thought mouse-look does exist, it still is an intriguing and fun game. Plus, you get to kill Hitler!
6
Blood
Blood is a brutal game! According to Wikipedia, "a central feature of Blood is an abundant (and often exaggerated) graphic violence, from which the game derives its name. Enemies can be blown to pieces, and the pieces often rain down on the player. Zombies' heads can be shot off and then kicked around like footballs, spewing fountains of blood." One of the first fps games to feature a multiplayer option, too.
7
Serious Sam
Seriously...I never before played a game with so many @#$% bad guys flying at me at the same time! Coupled with well-crafted graphics and nicely delivered humor, The First Encounter was awesome (The Second Encounter was great too).
8
System Shock II
An fps on a spaceship run by the more brutal, female version of HAL 9000...littered with ghosts and mutant zombies. Holy @#$%! This game has been modified a lot too. It scares the crap out of you. Quite enjoyable today (especially if you download all of the 3D model, texture, and audio upgrades). Think Resident Evil meets Doom. GameSpot declared the title "well ahead of its time" and stated that it "upped the ante in dramatic and mechanical terms" by creating a horrific gameplay experience.
9
Counter-Strike
I never got into Counter-Strike...mostly because I suck at online gaming (@#$% teenagers kick my ass). However, I cannot not mention this fossil. People still play the crap out of it and hacked versions of it (like Half-Life, it utilizes the Quake 2 engine...which is one reason that I didn't include Quake 2). Want a small free version? Download AssaultCube.
10
Unreal (preferably Gold)
This was a good fps that offered something new to me: bot death-match play. It's also the father to Unreal Tournament.
